I remember seeing a show once where a man was hypnotized into believing he was a human seat belt. Every time a certain word was said by the hypnotist it triggered the man to leap across the people sitting next to him as if he were actually a seat belt.
What caused those people to do all those funny things? Believe it or not they were hypnotized. Let me clarify some things before you think I'm a little weird. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The people on the stage agreed to set aside their conscious mind and allowed the hypnotist to access their sub-conscious mind. Your sub-conscious is like the hard drive on your computer. You give it commands and it follows them without judgment.

I only mentioned hypnotism to you because the Spanish learning tip I want to share with you requires a leap of faith. You have to be willing to set aside your conscious mind and allow access straight to your super computer sub-conscious in order for this technique to be successful.

Here is the technique that I want to recommend to you. You should read three or four blockbuster novels in Spanish even if your Spanish is still at a beginner's level. You want to read books that are simple and have a lot of words in them like John Grisham's and Tom Clancy's books. Even popular books like Harry Potter and The Davinci Code are excellent choices. Read the book in English first and then read it in Spanish. I have found popular books translated into Spanish at my local library and on Amazon.com.

I don't recommend that you use a dictionary. It will only slow you down and you'll give up before you even get to the second chapter. Your goal is to read the entire book even if you don't understand anything. If by the end of the book you understand the general plot than you have done well. After a while you'll find yourself using words, phrases, and grammar that you had no idea you knew. All thanks to those books you read when you understood almost nothing.

By doing this you have allowed your sub-conscious mind to digest tons of vocabulary and grammatical structures and you've seen them used correctly over and over again in many different contexts. At first you may feel like your wasting your time but you're not. It is crucial that you don't quit. By the time you've read a couple of books you'll suddenly become more confident with your ability to understand spanish and you'll be ready to tackle different and more complex aspects of the spanish language.

Copyright (c) 2008 Steven MagillDue to the cultural diversity in today's world, learning to speak Spanish is an excellent decision. When a person learns Spanish, they gain the ability to obtain a better cultural understanding and create more job opportunities. Many people of different cultural origins are constantly migrating to the United States, and the increase of people of Spanish speaking origin has created a lot of diversity in the country. However, with an increase of Spanish speaking people comes an increase in the amount of people who do not know English. Therefore, it helps with team communication if people entering the work force learn to speak Spanish. When a person looking for a job knows two more languages, such as English and Spanish, he or she becomes more valuable to the job market. Being able to speak Spanish will be a valuable asset to put on a resume, and will be considered needed by some employers.A person who has learned to speak Spanish can make an employer's life much easier. For instance, some industries thrive on attracting all members of the community to buy their products, including those who don't know English. For instance, an industry that needs a large market is the insurance industry. Everyone needs car insurance, health insurance, and life insurance. The only way to tell a person who only speaks Spanish about insurance is to speak Spanish. For this reason, many professionals who work in the insurance industry in the U.S are discovering that they need to learn Spanish on their own or employee someone who is willing to learn Spanish.Furthermore, often people who work generally in sales need to learn some way to increase and enhance their communication abilities. Sales is all about communicating with people. The best way to communicate is to make sure that everyone is able to understand one's message. For these reasons, many companies offer to pay for classes that might help one learn Spanish. These classes can be taken at night, and may be completed in about a year to two years.Once a person has learned Spanish, and is able to bring their ability to their place of employment, many opportunities may open up. For instance, learning Spanish creates job opportunities in the medical and customer service related fields. Also, management may offer travel opportunities to employees who have learned to speak Spanish, and a person who has learned Spanish may find themselves getting promoted to positions that require them to use their new Spanish speaking skill. Employees could become ambassadors or key speakers at meetings. To learn Spanish is to gain many opportunities in the world of work. In a nutshell, learning Spanish can be a way for a person to increase their income and likelihood of having constant opportunities for employment. With the right amount of tenacity and dedication, it can become easy to learn Spanish. It merely takes listening skills, attention to detail, patience, and diligence. These are all skills that can be transferred to the work environment and make a successful employee.------At last! Step 1: Determine Your Goal
The first thing you should do is ask yourself: what exactly do I want to accomplish? Am I going for total native fluency (requiring years of work) or do I just want to have a decent grasp of the language so I don't come off as completely ignorant when speaking to a native speaker? Also, what is your time frame for learning this material? Do you have years to work on it or only a few days or weeks before you go on vacation or meet your significant other's relatives?

Step 2: Get A Home Study Course
There's no getting around it: you're going to have to spend some money on some basic educational materials and this one is probably going to be the most expensive AND the most important. I've used Pimsleur, Rocket Spanish, Berlitz, and Rosetta Stone amongst others, and personally I liked Synergy Spanish (see my review at the end) better than any of the others, especially for someone who just needs to get to a basic level of proficiency where they can handle simple day-to-day conversations and transactions, and they only have a few days or weeks to get there: Synergy uses 68 lessons of 10 minutes each so you can complete the whole course in a few days or weeks depending on how much time you can invest, it's only $49, and if you're in a rush nothing will up your Spanish language skills faster.

Step #: Dictionaries, Thesauruses, and Translators
Personally, I like to use http://wordreference.com/ for my online Spanish-English dictionary, and I used Urban dictionary to look up Spanish sland and curse words (they're better than anybody for this), and I use Babelfish for my translator. You might also want to grad a paper dictionary and a wonderful little book called '501 Spanish Verbs' that has the most commonly used verbs and shows their conjugations, very helpful.

Step 4: Find a Native Spanish Speaker Who to Talk to
It could be a friend, it could be someone you met through a site such as Friends Abroad, it doesn't matter just so long as you have a native speaker to converse with occasionally. You don't need to do any type of formal lesson, in fact the more casual and colloquial it is, the better.

Step 5: Learn at Least ONE New Spanish Word Each Day--You MUST Commit!
Commit to learning at least one new Spanish word per day--this will be HUGE for adding to your vocabulary although it might not seem like it at the time. I like to use a site called Spanish-Word-A-Day who will gladly send you a new word to your RSS feed or to your iGoogle homepage--I know there's other sites that can also email you a new one(s) each day as well. The important thing is to commit to actually doing this, that way if you don't get any other Spanish work done that day then at least you still did SOMETHING if you've done this, and it really doesn't take but a few seconds.
Bonus Step: Watch Telenovelas! (Spanish language soap operas)
One of the best things you can do to improve your Spanish is to sit down for 30-60 minutes each day and watch a Spanish language soap opera, called a telenovela, which will almost always be available if you have cable or satellite. Personally, I find the best thing to do if you have Tivo or something similar is to turn on subtitles (Spanish not English) and then after a character says something pause it EACH time and figure out what they said, then repeat it a few times to yourself until you've got it and could understand it if you heard it again at full speed, then unpause it and continue to do this. You might only get through 5 minutes worth of the show in 30 minutes, but you will learn a LOT of Spanish.
